Fullerton’s women’s soccer team lost control of the game in the second half against Santa Ana College after a strong effort in the first half en route to a 3-1 loss on Friday afternoon.

Fullerton’s Kimmi Walsh pushed the tempo throughout the first half to try and get her team an early lead. The Hornets (5-3-2) battled to keep the score close in the first half with many opportunities via corner kicks but went into the second half
down a goal.

“We worked on corner kicks during practice,” said Elizabeth White, sophomore Hornet defender. “We did well, but we didn’t execute  as well as we should have.”

Santa Ana’s Reyna Fonseca put the Dons (7-3) further ahead early in the second half when she drove past multiple Hornet defenders on her way to slipping one past the Annika Hirshler to make the score 2-0.

The Dons’ Yoana Leon scored Santa Ana’s final goal of the game off of a counter attack. She received a short pass from teammate, Selena Ortiz, and blasted a 25-yarder past a diving goalkeeper in the top-left corner, giving Leon her fourth goal of the season.

Since the game was essentially over, the Hornet’s new goal was to make sure they weren’t shut out at home. Hornet Sophomore mid-fielder Ashley Wisor showed  frustration when the Hornet defense couldn’t get the ball away from the Dons.

The Dons’ offense dominated ball possession throughout the game leaving Fullerton with little chance to make a comeback.

Wisor wasn’t the only player to show signs of frustration, as Walsh, too, started losing motivation as the end of the game neared.

Sophmore midfielder Sarah Larsen stepped up and took the initiative to regain some self-respect for the Hornets. Larsen’s lob, aimed at a teammate, found its way over the goalkeeper’s head and into the back of the net.

The goal spoiled any thoughts of a clean sheet for the Dons. Had the Hornets not scored, the Dons would have had their 5th shut-out of the season.

“We need to work on our communication,” White said. “We can’t shut down the way we did.”

The Hornets will next travel to Orange Coast College, on Tuesday, to take on a tough Pirates team.
