On February 10, the Lady Hornets softball team opened up conference play with an impressive 5-0 shutout win over Santa Ana College.
Hornets starting pitcher, Brandi Escarzaga finished with a dominant complete game shutout performance with six strikeouts and only two walks.
The Hornets offense came alive in the fourth inning with four hits, and more importantly three runs. A stand up triple by shortstop Diana Payan began the inning and got the crowd into the game.
Singles by Jackie Munoz and Julie Handley kept the inning going and started the offensive surge.
The Hornet bats got hot again in the sixth, with singles by catcher Jordyn Botion and Munoz and a double by left fielder Handley.
Last season's coach of the year, Lisa Bassi, made a gutsy call and executed a double steal which was key in the two runs being scored in the inning off of the Handley double.
Fullerton was able to keep the shutout despite a standup triple by Santa Ana in the top of the seventh with a strikeout and two putouts by Escarazaga.
The Lady Hornets have started the season off great and look like they are ready for a strong run into the regionals this year.
The next home game will be Wednesday February 17 against Riverside Community College.
