LACC President’s actions illegal

Los Angeles City College's student-run newspaper, the Collegian, is an award-winning publication that has been in continuous print for 80 years. Its staff of approximately 30 students works tirelessly to publish high-quality content while adhering to rigorous journalistic values.

The Collegian is a training ground for writers, reporters, columnists and editors, as are thousands of other student-run publications that hold to the same principles, standards
and ethics.

But LACC's president, Jamillah Moore, has made calculated attempts to hinder the students' right to a free press.

She has tried to forbid a company working with the college from speaking to the student press; she has tried to pressure student reporters to sign releases for recording public meetings; she has violated California open meeting laws by requesting that reporters identify themselves; and she has attempted to silence the Collegian by slashing its budget by 40 percent – when the budgets of other student organizations were cut only 15 percent.

Adam Goldstein of the Student Press Law Center said that if he had to choose the biggest First Amendment offender in the country, he would most likely choose Moore.

And now, Moore is attempting to move the Collegian under student services, where the administration would have the option to edit all content, monitor stories and determine the direction of the paper.

An attack on free speech anywhere is an attack on free speech everywhere.

That is why we, the undersigned, have come together to universally condemn the actions of Moore and the actions of any administration that makes deliberate efforts to break the free speech of student publications.

As students, we have been taught to expect an environment where freedom of speech will go uncontested.

And as student journalists, we expect our administrations to understand that we strive to be an objective voice of reason. But we also recognize that any publication that disturbs the comfort of the comfortable will be challenged.

Student journalists at the University of Pittsburgh, the University of New Mexico and the University of Oregon, as well as countless untold others, have seen such assaults on their rights. This cannot stand.

We, as student journalists, come together today with a single message: We will not tolerate administrations that, for their own benefit, try to silence the voice of the student free press. We will continue to rebuke those in power who attempt to diminish that freedom, and we will not be silenced.

Shame on you Ken Sherwood! As a faculty member and particularly as President of the Academic Senate, you should be a role model for students. Instead you foster attacks on the very students you claim to provide access for. Have you forgotten the message Dr. Moore gives every tie she speaks to people...that student access is the primary goal of City College? You are a coward. You work behind the scenes to get other cowardly faculty to serve as your attack dogs. I find it shameful that City has an Academic Senate President who does not represent faculty and an ASO President who does not represent all of the student body. I thought Gestapo tactics died with Hitler.

Wow. Nice try Tim, but being fairly sure that you are one of the reporters that Rhonda Guess has used as part of her front to continue spreading her false claims about Dr. Moore, you really carry no credibility at all. Of course you will claim that that you have been above board on everything. Unfortunately for you, I actually have done my research on this and all of the associated issues. You have added yourself to a group of voices who have shown that they know absolutely nothing about first amendment law. And as far as why Senator Leland Yee would take up this fight, you are either joking or terribly misinformed. The answer to that is quite simple. Yee is planning a run for Mayor of San Francisco and is jumping on any bandwagon he can find that will get him some media coverage. I find it interesting that you didn't ask the question why would another State Senator, one who unlike Yee is actually respected in Sacramento - Curren Price, put out a press release denouncing Yee? The answer to that is also simple - Price took the time to talk to someone other than Rhonda Guess and discover the truth. You see, Tim, I know far more about first amendment law than you as I have researched it for close to 30 years. I also know more about California politics than you because I have more contacts in the state government. If you had done your research on this you would know that Leland Yee is quite the joke on Capitol Hill in Sacramento. No one takes him seriously, even the members of his own caucus don't talk to him. Rhonda Guess is a menace. She is infamous throughout the LACCD and I have spoken to faculty at her previous campus in the district who have indicated that when she got hired at City, they were thrilled to get rid of her. You can keep screaming about violations of the first amendment but you'll notice that weeks after that ridiculous claim was first made, there are no professional journalists taking up your call to action. I have spoken with many of them who have all said that they don't understand why the Collegian is making these claims because none of what you have claimed represents illegal or even unusual behavior on the part of Dr. Moore. But, keep yelling, Tim. I am sure it makes you feel better at some level even though the only people who are willing to listen are those who have only heard your side of the story.

To the person who wrote in the comment section, get your facts straight! For you to say that the Collegian is lying, well, you do not you what is really going on do you not? Also, what does Fox News and President Obama have to do with this situation? NOTHING! L.A. City College President Jamillah on several occasions to curtail students First Amendment rights. For this commentator to say what they said, there has been no violations to the First Amendment, well, California state Sen. Leland Yee has advised Moore and other administrators at City College to respect students rights to FREE SPEECH and Freedom of the Press in California. Plus, you may want to read California state laws 66300 and 66301 in regards to student publications in the state of California, also read California law AB1370, that pertains to protection of faculty advisers. So, Grant you may want to take the time to find out what these laws are about before you speak next time. And take a look ar the United States Constitution and what it says about Free Speech and Freedom of the Press, you may learn a thing or two about our government and how it works. Also, if we did do our research, which the Collegian did, obviously you were not there to see the staff do that, then why is Sen. Yee now involved in the matter? As for The Hornet, I want to say thank you for having the courage and stand with the Collegian on this matter. You see what the Collegian is going through at City College and with the all the deceit and propaganda that certain members in administration are engaging in. I know it is not every member in administration is like this, but, to the ones that are SHAME ON YOU!

It is sad that one more student paper has jumped onto this false story without making any effort to research or verify the facts. None of what the Collegian claims to be illegal actions by LACC's president have even happened, much less been illegal. Rhonda Guess and the student reporters of the Collegian are simply lying. There have been no efforts by anyone to deny the free press rights of LACC's student reporters. It's simply not true. Unfortunately, Rhonda and her staff have engaged in a systematic campaign of misinformation designed to cover up their own unethical and illegal behavior. It's all a distraction. In the meantime, their continued efforts - which continue to go unreported by any professional news agency - to silence their critics by making false claims of censorship. But, this should not be a surprise now that it has come out that Ms. Guess reporting experience includes a significant amount of time working for Fox News. Clearly she learned a lot while she was there because she appears to be practicing and teaching exactly the same kind of agenda-setting journalism practiced by Fox News by making up claims of censorship the same way all of the talking heads at False (oops - Fox) News continue to claim that President Obama is a socialist who wasn't born in the US. Apparently she believes in the Fox News/birther style of journalism which figures if you repeat a lie enough times, the public will believe it. Well, speaking for the truth, I hope people who continue to find this false story printed in the pages of their college newspapers will have learned enough critical thinking to check the facts before they buy the lie.
