Petitioners Deceive Students
Anti-gay marriage proposition petition stirs up controversy
Rachel Nishimura
Lambda Society took a politically active approach to thwart a petitioner gathering signatures for Proposition 22 without telling students what they were signing two weeks ago on the Quad.
The initiative's goal is to prevent California from recognizing same-sex marriages.
Lambda Society, a FC club focused on fighting inequality and discrimination toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community has joined efforts with the Human Rights Council and Equality For All to try to prevent signature gatherers from collecting enough signatures to put Proposition 22 on the ballot. Lambda members prepared for the petitioners arrival by setting up a table on the Quad with posters and clipboards to collect information for students interested in joining their volunteer efforts with Human Rights Council and Equality For All.
"This is a very important time in the LGBT community," said Lambda Community Coordinator Alex Salvador. "It's a poignant time to make our statement known."
While gay marriage is an issue that hits close to home for Lambda, the club recognizes that the issue transcends gay rights.
Lambda members are equally appalled by petitioners using corrupt tactics to collect signatures without divulging the true nature of the petition.
"We want to stress that we are trying to keep democracy alive by fighting corruption tactics," said ICC Representative Sarah Martin. "There are petitioners who trick people into signing initiatives by rubber banding or outright lying."
When the petitioner arrived on campus Lambda members set up camp around her table, forming a human chain.
They allowed students to walk through their chain, but informed them of what they stood for and reminded students to read the petitions and know what they concern before signing.
Lambda Vice President Jason Norcross approached the petitioner and was misinformed when he asked her about Prop.22, she told him it only worked to define marriage.
"When I asked her if it affected gay marriage, she told me that in no way did the petition affect gay marriage, it just simply gave marriage a definition," Norcross said. "There were about 20 of us there actually. We formed a circle around the table, not stopping people from approaching but letting people know we were there and opposed to what she was doing, namely misrepresenting herself and her petitions."
The impact of the political activism on campus has spread past Fullerton College into the outside world.
"I approached a petitioner at Target and asked her about the gay marriage initiative and she told me that she doesn't carry that one around anymore because of an incident at Fullerton College," said Marita Soler, President of FC Young Democrats.
