Maintaining a relentless mindset throughout the game, the Fullerton women's soccer team (5-2-1) withstood the Riverside Tigers (5-1-1), ending with a two goal tie.
Late in the first half, forward Kimmi Walsh was given an opportunity inside the 18-yard box from Erica Avalos to use her skills against Tiger defense. After two quick touches with the inside of her right foot, Walsh pounded a ground ball to the back of the net giving the Hornet's the first lead.
With the Tiger's continuously attacking every ball, Riverside seized a chance from a freekick at the top of the 18-yard box. Midfielder Nicole Cunningham put in all her strength to chip the ball over Fullerton defense, making the scoreboard tied at the end of the first half.
"We didn't connect and communicate up the field as much," said defender Eliabeth White about what contributed to a tied game.
Despite the numerous Hornet defenders standing in front of the goal, Tiger midfielder Danielle Delong powerfully got her foot on the ball. With the ball out of the goalkeeper's eyesight, it swiftly hit the back of the net, sending the Tigers winning.
"Coming into the game we knew the defense would have to be flawless. The first goal was a set-piece, and the other came from confusion," said Head Coach Pamela Lewin.
As the pressure built up, Fullerton executed an unstoppable run against Tiger defense. Having three defender's surrounding her, Walsh used a cut back to whisp around them. With only a second to think, she kicked the ball to the opposite goal post, giving the Hornet's a tie.
White commented that the team needs to improve on transitioning between offense and defense during every play. In addition, the team needs to keep up positive communication.
The Hornet's meet the Santa Ana Don's at home this Friday at 1 pm.
