Most anime films feature Barbie-doll proportioned women, over the top action, and sensational artwork. The new film “Evangelian: 1.0 you are (not) alone” covers all the typical anime bases.
The first of four other planned feature films, “Evangelian” is an exciting tetrology that dazzles in the first 10 minutes, when a quiet scene erupts into total chaos. The mayhem is quite powerful to behold, but the characters themselves could use a bit more testosterone.
The story is constructed around a wimpy boy named Shenji Ikari, He shows up in a rundown abandoned city to meet his father, the head of a corporation called NERV.
Mayhem ensues after the appearance of a humongous monster called Angel (seems like an oxymoron since the creature looks and acts nothing like an angel).
Angel is busy putting the finishing touches of destruction on the eradicated city while Shenji and his father embark on a piloting endeavor with the enormous robot called an Evangelian.
Through his battle with Angel, Shenji toughens up, gains confidence, and becomes a certified Eva pilot, which means Shinji is able to begin fight training.
As the story continues, Shenji morphs into a messiah type figure, from his fighting method of getting all worn down, tottering on the brink of defeat and then receiving a surge of energy, going completely berserk and then conquering his foe.
Evangelian: 1.0 you are (not) alone is a descent anime flick, despite its obnoxiously long name and unoriginal story concept. The film’s engaging animation and fantastic apocalyptic action sequences make it a worthwhile slice of anime pie.
